Mobility vs Flexibility: Why are either of them important?

You've probably heard both these terms used interchangeably, I know I have. But they actually have a slightly different meaning, even while being somewhat interconnected. They are both important, in their own ways. Let's dive in to some facts.

Definitions

Mobility is the ability for a joint to move through a full range of motion. Flexibility is the ability for a muscle to lengthen fully.

Why are they important?

Lack of mobility across joints can affect movements in different ways. Shoulder mobility can affect your posture during your squat; as can ankle, knee and hip mobility. Sometimes it can be surprising how lack of mobility in one area can affect an area you wouldn't think could be affected.

Flexibility reduces muscle tightness which can reduce risk of injury. Did you know that lack of flexibility can make exercise harder too? Having to contract muscles that are opposing tight muscles can make that movement more challenging than it needs to be.

Mobility and Flexibility are both important BUT they are not the same. Flexibility does not guarantee that joints can move through a full range of motion. Joints that are able to move through a full range of motion do not automatically create muscles that lengthen fully.

If you ever need to get something out of the back of that kitchen cabinet you already know why mobility is important in daily life. Flexibility will help keep you from straining those muscles when you pick up that heavy bag that may not have been an issue just the day before.

How do we improve?

Mobility work is usually dynamic and done before or during your actual workout. Mobility is one of the aspects I ask my clients to work on during each workout. The order of importance is: Form, Range of Motion (mobility), then Intensity (additional weight, speed, etc.).

Flexibility should be encouraged through static stretching which is best done when muscles are warm. After your workout is a great time, definitely after you have already been moving and your body is warm.

Do you need to work on your Mobility? Flexibility? Both? I am here to help!
