I am going to start a series of blog posts about some great local (or at least fairly local) runs; 5Ks, 10Ks, Half Marathons... Full disclosure here - I am able to find the positive in all of the runs that I have participated in. You will not find a series slamming any of these events. There will be honest information about what to expect. All of these events are worth trying out & I would love to see YOU out there some time!
I am going to kick this series off with the Blue Bell Fun Run.
On April 8th this year was the 39th annual Blue Bell Fun Run benefiting the Brenham High School Athletic program. This even has a 5K, 10K and 1 mile youth run and is held at Brenham High School. This was our 2nd year to run this event and it's a good one! Very well organized, and with approximately 3500 participants they really have to be. There are port-a-potties EVERYWHERE, I don't think I waited more than a couple of minutes ever. The volunteers work very hard to keep everything running smoothly with water, electrolyte beverages, oranges, snacks and of course - Blue Bell Ice Cream.
The starts for the races are staggered with the kids mile first (they take a different course that is actually led by a runner), then the 10K and the 5K starts last. The volunteers make an effort to get everyone organized by pace, and that is a daunting task considering the volume of runners. Control your expectations all you serious runners. If you are "in it to win it" you better be up front, getting through that crowd can take some time. The top picture in this blog is at the start, I start at the VERY BACK because I DO NOT do crowds. I was still passing people at the end of the 3.1 miles. There are a lot of strollers (such cute babies), a lot of dogs (also cute), and a lot of families (including littles) doing the 5K. Take your time & enjoy all the people - everyone is there to have a fun for a good cause.
The course is winding & hilly, many people will set a record here even if the crowd was not there. The atmosphere is just good fun! I highly recommend checking this race out! (Did you think I wouldn't?) I may try the 10K next year - yes, it's really just an effort to have less of a crowd... You can't blame me for trying. The price is very reasonable with the very latest registrations being $45, earlier registrations range from $25-$35. You know I would love to see YOU there next year on April 14th, 2018! Consider signing up when the time comes around https://bluebellfunrun.com/
Did I mention my kid won FIRST place in her age group!?!? Pretty proud of her!
