Let's talk about CONSISTENCY

CONSISTENCY

Well, we are coming upon the end of 2017. Less than one month left until 2018. How did you do with your 2018 resolutions or goals? I am going to let you in on a little bit of my life, my resolutions/goals for 2017, and how those went for me.

Let me be honest here, I write on this blog about fitness. Why? Because I enjoy it myself & want to share it with you. So my 2017 resolutions/goals weren't completely fitness related - that would have been too easy. Well, one of them - to get more sleep CONSISTENTLY - can definitely affect my fitness. The other one - to get my house in order, I mean REALLY in order - not directly related to fitness, but definitely affects my health. So lets talk about how I did with my resolutions/goals...

SLEEP: I did better, probably not exactly where I want/need to be on the sleep levels, but definitely an improvement.

My House: Well, let's just say I didn't gain control of it... When I ask myself why the answer is very clear. It is NOT something I worked on CONSISTENTLY. Not at all. I spent 2017 still trying to keep up with the daily requirements of my household; the laundry, the dishes, the dog hair (the dog hair), the bathrooms, the linens, the picking up & putting away, the trash, etc. So there is STILL dust, there are still piles of papers I should get organized, there are still boxes of stuff to sort, pictures to sort & store, so many of the things that I dream of having done so that I can have a home that is calming to me & less chaotic.

For me the hardest part of getting my workout in (after finding time of course, but I usually manage that) is deciding what to do when I don't have something specific to train for. Not because there's nothing for me to do, but because I just enjoy working out so I want to do all the workouts! Getting my home in order is not that easy for me, I do not enjoy the process nearly as much as working out. Most days I cannot figure out where to start, I move on from one task to the next with no apparent plan. When I think about it, this might be how someone who wants to start on the road to a healthier, fitter lifestyle might feel when they are trying to do it with no guidance or prior experience.

I think in 2018 instead of just pinning some of these ideas to my Pintrest boards I should actually try to execute a plan to reach my goal. I think that if I actually set aside that time each day or each week to work on this specific goal without worrying so much about it being perfect I might actually get closer to achieving this in 2018.

What about you? What if you just started with the plan of being CONSISTENT? Don't worry too much about doing that workout that is trendy for everyone else. Don't worry about not making it all the way to an hour every day. Start where you are, with what you have and do your best. Know that if you try a specific workout & you hate it you don't have to do that one again, there are plenty of other workouts to choose from out there.

As for improvement, well when we are talking about fitness it's actually pretty easy to see. A coach for one of my kids asks each person on the team to give 1% more. Can YOU do that? Can you give 1% more each week? Can you increase your time? Increase your weight? Increase your reps? That little bit each week will add up to HUGE gains by the end of the year. And you know, you might just see some other benefits.

Consistency also carries over to nutrition. Tracking your nutrition consistently (I use an app on my phone called My Fitness Pal) will really help you understand how what you eat fuels your body. But you have to track it completely, you have to know how your calories & macro-nutrients are affecting you. You have to know how your hydration levels are affecting you. But all of that is information for another blog post - for now lets stick with just being consistent and making sure we are getting it done.

So that's what I encourage you to get ready to do in 2018. NOW is the time to make your plan! I am going to work on my plan to consistently work on getting my home more organized and create a calm and inviting space for myself. I deserve it! YOU deserve to feel fit and healthy! If I can help you with your plan for 2018 please let me know!
